Attorney | Civil Rights, Criminal Defense & Appellate Litigation
District of Columbia & New York | 10 Years of Experience
Robert M. Schechter is an accomplished litigator whose practice centers on civil rights, criminal defense, appellate advocacy, and complex litigation. With a strong commitment to the courtroom, Mr. Schechter represents clients in both civil and criminal matters, with a particular focus on gun rights, constitutional issues, appeals, and business-related disputes.
A significant portion of Mr. Schechter’s practice involves representing individuals in matters related to New York firearm licensing, including CCW license applications, denials, and revocations. He regularly handles Article 78 proceedings and appeals, taking an individualized and strategic approach to each case. His experience navigating administrative agencies and licensing authorities provides him with a unique perspective that strengthens his criminal defense practice and highlights issues of unequal treatment faced by many individuals within the legal system.
Mr. Schechter is known for his accessibility and client-focused representation. He is consistently available to his clients and works diligently to provide personalized attention and thorough legal preparation in every matter he handles.
Prior to joining Tilem & Associates, PC, Mr. Schechter worked with the United States Attorney’s Office, where he focused on crimes against children and immigrants, as well as technology-related offenses involving intellectual property. He also gained international legal experience while working at a global law firm in Hong Kong, representing an international company responding to the legal consequences of an ecological disaster.
In addition to his private practice, Mr. Schechter has a strong record of public service. He volunteered with the New York Legal Assistance Group, counseling low-income individuals on naturalization and landlord-tenant matters. He also contributed policy research while working with the New York Center for Juvenile Justice, drafting policy papers aimed at reducing youth incarceration. Outside the practice of law, he has been politically active, serving as a field organizer and contributing to a successful United States Senate campaign.
